Papal visits
A legacy of liturgical craftsmanship
Baker Liturgical Art has had the honor of contributing to historic papal visits to the United States, designing custom vestments and sacred vessels for major liturgical celebrations.
From the intricate details of ceremonial garments to the artistry of handcrafted liturgical vessels, these commissions reflect a deep respect for tradition, careful preparation, and the meaningful role craftsmanship plays in worship.
Pope Benedict XVI – the 2008 Papal Visit
For Pope Benedict XVI's 2008 visit to the United States, Baker Liturgical Art was commissioned by the Archdiocese of Washington to design the principal chalice, complementary chalices, and ciboria used during the papal celebrations.
The principal chalice was crafted in sterling silver with two-tone gold and cloisonné fire-enamel medallions. Its design incorporated the coats of arms of Pope Benedict XVI and Archbishop Donald Wuerl, along with the cross from the Archdiocesan seal—details created to reflect the significance of the occasion. Brian Baker also designed vestments for the visit, continuing the family's tradition of service to the Catholic Church.
Pope Francis – the 2015 Papal Visit
For Pope Francis's historic 2015 visit, Brian Baker designed the Pope's vestments and sacred vessels for Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.
The commission also included garments for attending cardinals, the papal entourage, and nearly 300 bishops. Working together, Brian and Lisa Baker helped coordinate the designs, fittings, and preparations for this extraordinary celebration.
A tradition of craftsmanship and service
The same dedication to tradition, craftsmanship, and careful preparation that guided these historic commissions continues to shape Baker Liturgical Art's work today. From custom liturgical furnishings and sacred art to complete church renovation and restoration, Baker brings that same level of care and expertise to every project.
